In response to David's query about the treatment of documentary subjects:
 
Hap Kindem has already mentioned Rosenthal's anthology (New Challenges for
Documentary), but I wanted to draw your attention to a very important essay
in it: Cal Pryluck's "Ulitimately We Are All Outsiders."  It is a
provocative argument about the filmmaker's responsibility to his/her
subjects.  I think Pryluck's position is ethically sound, though I have the
impression that his is a minority opinion.  Actually, I don't know of too
many other essays that address the subject.
 
I also wonder whether Cal has had any further thoughts on the essay, lo
these many years.
