In response to David's query about the treatment of documentary subjects: Hap Kindem has already mentioned Rosenthal's anthology (New Challenges for Documentary), but I wanted to draw your attention to a very important essay in it: Cal Pryluck's "Ulitimately We Are All Outsiders." It is a provocative argument about the filmmaker's responsibility to his/her subjects. I think Pryluck's position is ethically sound, though I have the impression that his is a minority opinion. Actually, I don't know of too many other essays that address the subject. I also wonder whether Cal has had any further thoughts on the essay, lo these many years. ___________________________________________________________ James Peterson University of Notre Dame [log in to unmask]
