They are part of the Gullah people, a part of black culture with its own traditions and dialect (not unlike Caribbean black culture). The film focuses largely on the women of this family: an older shaman figure who refuses to leave, a young woman who has lived in the city for several years (and is resented by the women who stayed behind), a woman with aspirations for her people that some family members see as grandiose. It's not a simple film. The relationships among the women are complex and multilayered, and the Gullah dialect is, at times, a bit difficult to follow. It's an interesting film, but it may be a bit intimidating for students. ---------- If the world were a logical place, Men would ride side-saddle. --Rita Mae Brown-- ---------- | | BITNET : JBUTLER@UA1VM | | Jeremy G.
