Seems to me that if this august nation was to abandon it's ideals and get gung-ho behind some inventor's gleam, it would be more likely to do so if the technology has some socially-redeeming qualities, like a system of sensors on the nations' highways that prevented cars from escaping their lanes or colliding with one another.
