Re: Digital Television There are a number of commentators and researchers who already agree that digital television makes considerable sense. The argument that the U.S. should pursue it as a national goal is interesting, but flawed for two major reasons: -The current administration has made abundantly clear that there is no coherent industrial policy. It is anathema to the ideology of the unseen hand; -Perhaps even more important is that the managers of this nation's relevant industries abandoned the domestic production of consumer electronics virtually completely, which means that whichever HDTV standard is agreed upon, the Japanese, Taiwanese, French (General Electric/Thompson) and Dutch (Philips/Magnavox) manufacturers will be delighted to manufacture appropriate technology for the U.S. -Henry Breitrose Dept. of Communication Stanford (All of the above my opinion, and certainly not Stanford's)
