Dear colleagues,
The Department of Communication at Tulane University is searching for two assistant professors in media studies:

  1. Media Industries and Production Cultures: http://apply.interfolio.com/113284

We seek a colleague whose research and teaching addresses screen cultures and media, including film, television, digital media, and/or the interplay across different forms of entertainment and production and whose work engages with interdisciplinary and intermedial issues. Specifically, we are interested in a candidate whose work takes a critical approach to the increasingly diverse and changing nature of screen cultures and media industries. Proliferating networked devices, audience analytics, streaming platforms, media ownership and policy, expanded textualities, and maker and fan communities are transforming patterns of cultural consumption and production. Intersections of the above with race, gender, sexuality, disability and/or class are desirable. We seek a faculty colleague to expand

our understanding and teaching of production cultures, contributing to our strength in cinema,

television, and digital media studies and practice, and bolstering both our “Texts and Representations” and “Structures and Institutions” areas of the undergraduate core curriculum. Candidates should be prepared to teach one or more of our core offerings (Film Analysis, Media Industry Analysis, New Media Analysis), introductory and advanced topics, and particular courses such as Storytelling Across Media (offered in conjunction with Digital Media Practices)

and others in their area(s) of expertise. The course load for this position is 2-2.

  1. Platform Studies: http://apply.interfolio.com/113283

The Department of Communication at Tulane University invites applications for a tenure track position at the Assistant Professor rank for a scholar of platform studies. We are especially interested in applicants whose research and teaching interests focus on the structures and institutions that shape property, access, ownership, and/or governance of digital platforms. Possible topics include algorithmic systems and design; licensing and copyright; financialization and marketization; surveillance and privacy; and social movements and platform activism. Critical and intersectional approaches that examine social inequalities and the exercise of power are particularly welcome. We seek a faculty colleague to expand the “Structures and Institutions” area of the undergraduate core curriculum Candidates will be required to teach the core course, Technology Analysis. The course load for this position is 2-2.

The Department has a strong intellectual commitment to innovative interdisciplinary and transnational media research, evidenced in the scholarship and teaching of our faculty, many of whom have officially shared appointments with other departments and programs in the School of Liberal Arts.
We are located in the culturally vibrant city of New Orleans, a historical gateway to the Americas and home to diverse global diasporas. We are committed to creating an intellectually diverse, inclusive, and equitable institution, and we especially encourage candidates from historically underrepresented groups to apply.
