Dear friends, I’m writing with an invitation to join the Texas Tech University Department of Journalism & Creative Media Industries for a conversation between games/tech journalist Gita Jackson (VICE Media's Motherboard) and Dr. Megan Condis (Assistant Professor, JCMI/COMS), with Q&A to follow. The event will take place Tuesday, February 23 at 5pm Central US Time via Zoom. [cid:image003.png@01D705E8.8D260670]Gita Jackson is an award winning writer that has published with MTV News, GQ, Kotaku, and Paste Magazine, telling stories that ask their readers to think about the internet and new media entertainment as holistic parts of their lives. Gita currently works for Motherboard, Vice’s technology website, and is featured on the Waypoint Radio podcast. Dr. Megan Condis is an assistant professor of game studies at Texas Tech University. Her book, Gaming Masculinity: Trolls, Fake Geeks, and the Gendered Battle for Online Culture, was published in 2018 by the University of Iowa Press. Her current book project, Designing Women: Sex Bots, Virtual Secretaries and Other Gendered Constructions, investigates how technologies become gendered and how gender is technologized. This event is part of JCMI’s Video Game Industry Speaker Series that began in 2020 with Ben Medler, Principal Data Scientist, Electronic Arts, and will continue later this spring with game designer, producer, and writer Carmen Askerneese (COMC ’14). To register: Please register by emailing me at [log in to unmask]<mailto:[log in to unmask]> no later than 5pm on Monday, Feb 22. I will then share the Zoom link and password with all registrants on the morning of Tuesday, Feb 23.
