Hi Prof. Groening. I would recommend your student search a database like Business Source Complete to find results from trade industry publications as well as industry reports. The database includes "Broadcasting & Cable" which would likely have tracked on this aspect of the industry, as well as more publications more specific to the video retail market. For example, I found the attached article in Video Store Magazine which has a graph of historical DVD prices from 1997-2004. "New-Release Price Trends For Theatrical Catalog SKUs: 1997-2004." Video Store Magazine, vol. 26, no. 37, Sept. 2004, p. 17. Here is another citation from Billboard that discusses the growth in the DVD market. The abstract is below, but I don't have a pdf to share. Fitzpatrick, Eileen. "VHS Demand Falling As DVD Grows." Billboard, vol. 113, no. 14, Apr. 2001, p. 94. Discusses the sales of motion pictures on VHS videotapes and DVD videodiscs in the United States as of spring 2001. Report from Cambridge Associates indicating a declining demand for VHS titles; Survey by Alexander and Associates concluding that many DVD-player purchasers also buy an additional videocassette recorder (VCR) and continue to purchase VHS titles; Popularity of DVD releases with suppliers. I hope this helps! I am working with an Economics PhD student who is writing a dissertation on exhibition windows. She is looking for resources to find the historical price points of DVDs. Does anyone have any ideas on where she might find this or a good starting place?
