PhD STUDENTS REGISTRATION OPEN! FILMFORUM 2016 XIV MAGIS - GORIZIA INTERNATIONAL FILM STUDIES SPRING SCHOOL Bodifications: Mapping the Body in Media Cultures We are pleased to inform you that registration is open for the 2016 FilmForum/MAGIS - International Film Studies Spring School, which will be held from March 9 to March 15, 2016 in the charming city of Gorizia, Italy. We would be grateful if you could circulate this document among your students and colleagues. FilmForum/MAGIS Spring School is an international film and media studies conference aimed at PhD students organized by the University of Udine (Italy) in collaboration with: Concordia University, Montreal; Fachhochschule Potsdam; Goethe-Universität, Frankfurt am Main; Université de Lausanne; Université de Montréal; Université du Québec à Montréal; Université Sorbonne Nouvelle - Paris 3; University of Malta. Inaugurated in 2003, FilmForum has now become one of the most important events in the field of film and media studies, also being considered highly influential across several other disciplines. The School is in fact internationally renowned for its interdisciplinary flair, for the originality of its approaches, and for its cutting edge topics. FilmForum features: - morning plenary sessions: conference lectures held by distinguished keynote speakers and artists - workshops: smaller group seminars where students interact with scholars, media professionals, artists, and curators - an exciting evening screenings programme - exhibitions and performances - social events to facilitate face-to-face interaction among students and between students and scholars. For these reasons, the School represents a vibrant research context as well as a lively and friendly learning environment, where students can engage in fruitful conversations with fellow colleagues from all over the world, exchange ideas with more experienced scholars, and create new collaborations, thus enhancing their academic experiences and careers. For its 2016 edition, FilmForum promotes two research projects. Bodifications: Mapping the Body in Media Cultures (9-15 March) is dedicated to the transformations of the body in contemporary media cultures. More specifically, we aim to investigate: 1. The function of media representations in the social (re)definition of the body; that is, the ways in which media texts and discourses produce repertories, iconographies, images, perceptions, models, and meanings that influence the construction of the body and its transformations; 2. The role of media technologies in the physical transformation and enhancement of the body; that is, the ways in which the intersection of body and technology contributes to overcome the biological, neurological, and psychological limits of the (human) body; 3. The role of media technologies in the epistemological reconceptualization of the body as a cultural and scientific object during the last two centuries, and their influence on the concurrent transformation of the observing subject - from external and "detached" to embodied and embedded in the object itself. Each of the School's sections (Film Heritage, Media Archaeology, Porn Studies, Post-Cinema, Visual Arts) employs its own methodological perspectives to carry out a specific project within a joint research programme. Confirmed Keynote speakers: Kevin Brownlow, Filmmaker and Film Historian (UK) Jack Halberstam, University of Southern California (US) Erkki Huhthamo, University of California Los Angeles (US) Isaac Julien, Installation Artist and Film Director (UK) Laura U. Marks, Simon Fraser University -Vancouver (CA) Bernard Perron, Université de Montréal (CA) Jackie Stacey, Manchester University (UK) Thomas Waugh, Concordia University (CA) History of Cinema without Names (9-10 March). The main purpose of the History of Cinema Without Names project is the creation of a new "topography" of the basic stylistic elements that, while common to both authors and genres, can also find independent and diverse modes of connection. These levels of aggregation (styles, genres, authors) are not separated; rather, they mutually intersect, integrate each other, and coexist. Outwardly, they might seem grounded on essentialist principles (such as the figure of the "creative personality"; or the morphologies of discourse, e.g. comic, crime, melodrama, etc.). Instead, they are "systems" shaped by the relationships that occur at a given moment between their constitutive units: their investigation help us to overcome a "history of cinema" based on the notion of author. Confirmed Keynote speakers: Pierre Bayard, University Paris 8 - Vicennes-St Denis Maurizio Ferraris, Univesità degli Studi di Torino. We kindly invite you to encourage students from your institution to take advantage of this unique learning opportunity. The FilmForum offers PhD students two different registration opportunities: 1) The Full FilmForum Registration Fee is EUR 250 and includes 8 nights accommodation (Bed & Breakfast). 2) The Simple Registration Fee is EUR 70 and guarantees the possibility to access all the sessions, workshops, and evening screenings (NOTE that in this case participants will be responsible of their own accommodation). 3) Press passes are also available for students willing to cover the event on different media outlets [EUR 30 (no accommodation included)].
