LAST DAY! CELEBRATE PRIDE MONTH WITH PRAGDA: 25% OFF OUR LGBT LATIN FILMS

Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Pride Month (LGBT Pride Month) is
currently celebrated each year in the month of June to honor the 1969
Stonewall riots in Manhattan. The Stonewall riots were a tipping point for
the Gay Liberation Movement in the United States. Don’t miss out on
Pragda’s LGBT Pride Month hard to resist special offer. Three of its most
popular films at 25% off! The three titles would make an important
contribution to any collection of LGBT narrative cinema from Latin
America. USE CODE PRIDE25

SOUTHERN DISTRICT (ZONA SUR)
Juan Carlos Valdivia / Bolivia / 2011 / 109 min / Spanish and Aymara with
English subtitles
La Paz’s Zona Sur neighborhood is Bolivia’s most exclusive enclave and has
housed the country’s affluent elite for generations. In an
adobe-tile-roofed castle, a statuesque matriarch reigns over her spoiled
offspring and indigenous servants. But social change, however unwelcome,
is on its way. As the mother squabbles with her self-indulgent, oversexed
teenage son and clashes with her petulant daughter, her 6-year-old boy
wanders the rooftops unsupervised. The scent of impending decline
permeates the air, and the threat of shifting aristocratic privilege
heralds a new era in a seemingly interminable class war. Bolivia’s
official entry for the Academy® Awards, this searing portrait of a
patrician family in flux exposes the bubble of decadence in which they
exist. With outstanding cinematography, Valdivia elevates camerawork from
a craft to the level of art.
RELATED SUBJECTS: Cinema Studies, Cultural Clash, Family, Gay and Lesbian,
Sociology, Youth.

UNDERTOW (CONTRACORRIENTE)
Javier Fuentes León / Peru, Colombia, France, Germany / 2010 / 100 min /
Spanish with English subtitles
Highly acclaimed and hugely popular gay drama about a married fisherman in
love with an artist, Undertow is the winner of 39 film festival awards.
Miguel is a young and handsome fisherman who lives with his beautiful
pregnant wife in Cabo Blanco, a small traditional fishing village in
Northern Peru. What nobody knows is that Miguel is having a passionate
affair with Santiago, a painter ostracized from the community due to his
sexuality and agnostic views. When Santiago drowns accidentally, Miguel
has to make an important choice that could cause him to lose the people he
loves the most. With its emotionally charged love story, sweeping images
of the beautiful Peruvian coastline, and excellent cast, Undertow examines
the complicated intersection of manhood, masculinity, sexuality, and
tradition.
RELATED SUBJECTS: Cultural Clash, Family, Fatherhood, Gay and Lesbian,
Grief / Trauma, Loneliness.

THE FISH CHILD (EL NIÑO PEZ)
Lucía Puenzo / Argentina, Spain, France / 2011 / 96 min / Spanish and
Guaraní with English subtitles
Celebrated writer-director Lucía Puenzo follows up her 2007 award winning
film XXY, with this gripping tale of forbidden lesbian romance set on both
sides of Argentina’s class divide. A privileged teenage daughter of a
powerful judge, Lala has fallen hard for her family’s 20-year-old
Paraguayan maid, Ailin. The girls hatch a plan to rob Lala’s family to
fund their dream of living together in Paraguay, on the shores of Lake
Ypoá. But while Lala waits to be reunited with her lover in Ypoá, Ailin is
detained in the outskirts of Buenos Aires for a crime she did not commit.
Beautiful cinematography, a compelling love story, and a touch of magical
realism make The Fish Child a must see film from one of the best Latin
American female directors working today.
RELATED SUBJECTS: Adolescence / Coming of Age, Cultural Clash, Friendship,
Gay and Lesbian, Women.
