“Teaching History with …”  (Film and television resource guides)

A Professional Mini-Series to be published by The Rowman & Littlefield Publishing Group, as part of the Film and History series

Film and television are increasingly significant as purveyors of the past for students, shaping their understandings of not only historical events and figures, but the social and cultural contexts in which they are situated.  In response to the growing need for historical film and television literacy, the Rowman & Littlefield Publishing Group is seeking authors for a new mini-series of professional books focused on teaching history with a variety of genres, to be published as part of its rapidly growing “Film and History” book series. These single-volume professional works will be marketed to college, university, and high school faculty and libraries. 

Proposals for a range of “Teaching History with …” volumes are sought, including:

•	Teaching History with Horror
•	Teaching History with Science Fiction 
•	Teaching History with Fantasy
•	Teaching History with Comedy
•	Teaching History with Costume Drama
•	Teaching History with Race Films
•	Teaching History with Westerns
•	Teaching History with War Films
•	Teaching History with Animated Cartoons

Each volume should be a designed as an accessible, jargon-free resource guide that introduces the reader to methods of teaching history through a single film genre.  Contents should include:

•	The Genre and History
A comprehensive introduction to the genre
Key themes, concepts, periods
Interconnections between the genre and history

•	Pedagogy
Constructing significant teaching and learning objectives
Challenging and building students’ understandings of the past
Developing analytical and interpretive skills through the genre
Understanding the genre’s films as cultural critique
Issues of historical accuracy and historical narrative within the genre

•	Materials
Sample course projects, discussion questions, assignments, syllabi, and study guides 
Overviews and guides for classroom use of key films in the genre
Suggested supplemental materials: further/background reading, primary sources, music, art, etc.


Authors interested in writing one of these volumes should submit a proposal including: 1) A brief statement of interest, including prior teaching history with film experience; 2) A tentative table of contents 3) A brief CV; 4) A writing sample tied to one of the volume’s components. Proposals for any given volume will be accepted until the volume is assigned. Authors may submit proposals for multiple volumes, but each proposal should be complete in itself.
