*| TWN Releases Feminist Film Classics: JANIE'S JANIE and MAKE OUT Third World Newsreel's historical Newsreel collection provides contemporary audiences with a vast archive of political documentary films chronicling the social movements of the late 60s and early 70s. JANIE'S JANIE and MAKE OUT, two Newsreel films from the early 70s, have been preserved and are now available for purchase and rental thanks to the generous contributions of New York Women in Film and Television, original members of the Newsreel collective and Richard Brick. JANIE'S JANIE (Newly Preserved) "First I was my father's Janie, then I was my Charlie's Janie, now I'm Janie's Janie." --Jane Giese Produced by The Newsreel collective, JANIE'S JANIE is an extraordinary document of the early 1970's women's movement. In this personal documentary, Jane Giese, a working class woman in Newark, comes to realize that she has to take control of her own life after years of physical and mental abuse. The "personal" aspect of the film was unusual for early Newsreel, and its very existence resulted from gender issue struggles within the collective itself. It is a document of a time and its issues, and of the efforts of feminists to give creative visual form to their concerns. Using both interviews and verité material, it is one of the more complex Newsreel films. Principal collaborators were: Geri Ashur, Peter Barton, Marilyn Mulford and Stephanie Palewski, with music by Bev Grant. "In her own words, this working-class woman tells how, after being dominated by father and husband, she was able to develop her own personality... an absorbing account..." --Richard F. Shepard, New York Times Newsreel | 1972 | 25 min | $225 http://twn.org/catalog/pages/cpage.aspx?rec=1324&card=price ---------------------------------------- MAKE OUT (Newly Preserved) A short created by Geri Ashur, Andrea Eagan, Marcia Salo Rizzi and Deborah Shaffer and co-directed by Ashur and Peter Schlaifer, the film shows a young couple making out in a car while a voice-over reveals the young woman's real thoughts about what is happening. This film is unique in the Newsreel collection, as it was filmed with actors, with a voice-over script created from a women's group discussion. "The conception and realization of MAKE OUT is economical and provocative. The voice-over commentary works in effective counterpoint to the visuals, and undermines the realistically portrayed encounter that we might otherwise think normal... Make Out can be highly effective within a screening context where the girl's thoughts in the film can be completed and studied..." --Bill Nichols, Cineaste Newsreel | 1970 | 5 min | $100 http://www.twn.org/catalog/pages/cpage.aspx?rec=899&card=price ---------------------------------------- | How to Order Online: Visit www.twn.org to place your credit card or PayPal order.
