Arising out of a ‘small country’ context, the event has been distinguished over the years by its concern to engage artists, makers, academics, writers, industry professionals and community activists interested in questions of documentary representation at the intersection of theory and practice. Focusing on non-fiction and documentary-related work produced within Aotearoa, Australia and the Asia Pacific region, the conference includes presentations of works-in-progress or recently completed works, as well as academic papers. In 2011, the overarching, interdisciplinary ethos of Expanding Documentary continues the event’s emphasis on new and revised directions in thinking and practice while keeping in sight significant questions of subjectivity, embodiment, ethics, history, politics, economy and technology in the process of making and interpreting documentary works. Four key areas of interest guide programming: 1. Ways in which culturally distinctive knowledge systems inform the production, representation and interpretation of documentary-related work. 2. The mediation of documentary through augmented realities, mobile media, web 2.0 apps, interactive game technology and other digital platforms. 3. Thinking practices through production, creativity and pedagogy. 4. Political and social documentary screens – large and small. Expanding Documentary welcomes papers and creative works (moving image, photography, installation, sound, digital and multimedia) that engage creatively and critically with the following questions: ** What has changed and what remains the same when thinking about, making and distributing documentary-related work in digital environments? ** In what ways can practices of participation, collaboration, and location in place and time be thought differently - and how might this inform the ‘doing’ of practice? How do shifts in social, political, economic and cultural environments impact on documentary-related work locally? Globally? In what ways do identity and subjectivity currently influence forms of documentary expression? ** How do we conceive of the relationships between history, theory and practice of documentary-related work – as makers, as educators, as writers? ** How do technologies and their uses factor in present day making, teaching and thinking around documentary-related matters? In addition to the abstract, please include a separate front page detailing: * title of the paper or work * name and contact details * programming strand your paper or work best fits within (as a guideline) * technical requirements for presentation * institutional or other work affiliation * a brief biography * links to websites displaying work are welcome if you prefer single blind peer review for creative work Abstracts will go through a double blind peer review process (or single blind review where necessary for creative practice). Each abstract will be reviewed by at least two referees. Notification of acceptance will be sent by the 19th of August. Confirmation of attendance will be required within a month of notification. Every attempt will be made to include all successful peer-reviewed papers/presentations. A waitlist will be established in the event that not all peer-reviewed papers/presentations can be programmed. PUBLICATION OPTIONS A book of published abstracts for conference presentations.
