Bill Naughton - A Centenary Conference. 29th May 2010

 

As part of Bolton's celebration of Bill Naughton's centenary, there will be a Conference focusing on Naughton's contribution to cultural life from the 1950s to the 1990s. Keynote speakers are Neil Sinyard (formerly Professor of Film Studies, University of Hull) and Stephen Lacey (Professor of Drama, Film and Television at the University of Glamorgan). The conference will be hosted jointly by the University of Bolton, Bolton Museum & Archive Service and the Octagon Theatre.

 

Papers are welcomed on any (or a combination) of the following areas:

 

*	Studies of the films of his work: The Family Way (1966), Spring and Port Wine (1970), Alfie (1966), its sequel Alfie Darling (1975) and 2004 remake. 
*	Studies of actors and collaborators in the films: Michael Caine, James Mason, Hayley Mills, Jude Law, Lewis Gilbert, the Boulting Brothers, Paul McCartney.
*	Changing masculinities in 1960s stardom
*	The British Cinema scene after the New Wave
*	His plays and their adaptation (from fiction to theatre; from radio to TV; from play to film).
*	Constructions of Northernness
*	Place and landscape
*	Irishness and the emigrant experience in Naughton's work
