Falicov Publication date: 19 April 2007

224 pages 978-1-904764-92-2 £16.99 (pbk) 978-1-904764-93-9 £45.00 (hbk) Given the recent worldwide critical success of Argentine films such as Pizza, birra, faso (Pizza, Beer, Smokes, 1997), Mundo grúa (Crane World, 1999), Esperando al mesías (Waiting for the Messiah, 2000), La ciénaga (The Swamp, 2001), Glue-Historia adolescent en el medio de la nada (Glue, 2005) and Agua (Water, 2006), this unique English-language study is long overdue. A comprehensive historical overview, The Cinematic Tango explores the cultural politics of over sixty years of filmmaking, tracing Argentine cinema from the 1940s to the present day. Through insightful case studies and personal interviews with leading filmmakers, Tamara L. Falicov explores how the portrayal of national culture on film has been shaped, articulated and debated through the lens of state policy and the dynamics of the global film market. The book includes in-depth discussion of the 1980s post-dictatorship era when national cinema was utilised by the state as a public relations tool abroad, and the contemporary period of the 1990s under the Menem administration when financial incentives led not only to the production of commercial 'blockbusters' but also created new opportunities for first-time directors, sparking the recent surge of low-budget, independent filmmaking that has come to be known as 'The New Argentine Cinema'. Films discussed in the volume include La tregua (The Truce, 1974) Camila (1984), La historia oficial (The Official Story aka The Official Version, 1985), Comodines (Cops, 1997) and La furia (The Fury, 1997). Tamara L. Falicov is Associate Professor in the Department of Theatre and Film and Latin American Studies at the University of Kansas.
