Call For Papers Imagining Iran: A Symposium on Iranian Cinema The conveners of Imagining Iran are now calling for papers from academics, postgraduates, writers and industry practitioners to present 20 minute papers at a one-day symposium to be held in the School of Media, Film and Theatre at the University of New South Wales in mid-November 2005 (date to be confirmed). Over the past decade Iranian cinema has been the subject of immense international attention and critical debate, often being the primary topic of discussions around the question of contemporary 'art cinema' and the continuing formal and philosophical evolution of film itself. This symposium seeks to bring local scholars together to consider the phenomenon not only of the Iranian cinema itself from a variety of different perspectives, but also the extraordinary international response it has received in frequently being offered as primary evidence for a 'world cinema' feasibly outside the economic, cultural and conceptual axis of 'Hollywood'-style approaches to feature filmmaking. The purpose of the symposium is to bring together scholars working on various aspects of Iranian cinema, in order to exchange and disseminate research in this area and to generate future possible scholarly collaborations in this lively field of study. Scholars working in related fields (eg. media, visual arts, theatre etc.) are also invited to submit proposals. Possible topics include but are not limited to: The work of individual directors Pre- and Post- Revolutionary Cinema Women, feminism, gender The role of children and children’s cinema Iranian cinema and contemporary cinephilia The international critical reception of Iranian cinema Iranian cinema and conceptions of film history International co-productions Film festivals Censorship The Nation Cinema and Islam Iranian diasporas (incl. filmmaking and reception) Teaching Iranian cinema Theoretical and conceptual aspects Allegory For more information please contact the conveners: Dr Michelle Langford [log in to unmask] phone: +61 (0)2 9385 4489 Dr Hamish Ford [log in to unmask] Please submit a 300 word proposal stating the topic, aims and scope of the paper along with a brief CV (no more than 1 page) via email to Michelle Langford by the deadline.
