The Columbia Companion to American History on Film: How the Movies Have Portrayed the American Past. Ed. Peter C. Rollins. Columbia University Press, 2003. (ISBN: 0-231-11222-X) (110 pictures) This collection of essays took 7.5 years to produce and will be a landmark production; the most important aspect is that it is NOT a history of film, but an overview of how films have treated American history. Film & History, the scholarly journal, has been conducting such explorations for three decades and this collection consolidates the progress in this line of inquiry. The book is dedicated to John E. O'Connor and Martin A. Jackson, two pioneers in the field and the founders of Film & History back in 1970. A table of contents can be found under "Recent News" on the Film & History web site: http://www.h-net.msu.edu/~filmhis/recent_news/toc_columbia_companion.htm A florid description of the book and its goals can be found on the IAMHIST web site: http://www.iamhist.org/books/index.html Scholars take note!!
