I, too, studied Latin in high school, and recall that the letter "v"
was pronounced as a "w" sound. (and a "c" was always "hard", as in
"k",so "vici" was pronounced  "weecky" not "weechy" ).  However, the
Latin of the Roman Catholic liturgy , or "Church Latin" (the Latin
with which Mr. Gibson would be most familiar ) is pronounced in the
modern Italian way, with v sounds and soft 'c's.
