A good reference source is the COMPANION ENCYCLOPEDIA OF MIDDLE EASTERN AND NORTH AFRICAN FILM, ed. Olvier Leaman (Routledge, 2001). It's pricey, but you might be able to get it through inter-library loan. Another good source is ARAB & AFRICAN FILM MAKING, by Lizbeth Malkmus and Roy Armes--a decade old now but still a ground-breaking work that deals with colonial and post-colonial films. For specific film titles, try the Facets website: http://www.facetsvideo.com/asticat and search by country of origin Some Iranian possibilities might include Mohammed Jafari's CHRISTINE, Jafar Panahi's THE CIRCLE, and Miriam Shariar's DAUGHTERS OF THE SUN. The Facets list just for Iran contains a couple dozen other possibilities. If you want to extend to Islamic societies beyond the Middle East as such (sub-Saharan Africa, for example), check the Library of African Cinema at California Newsreel: http://www.newsreel.org Senegal's Ousmane Sembene has addressed issues that touch on Islamic faith in that country in several films, including MANDABI, CEDDO, and GUELWAAR. Or more generally: What films set in Islamic countries deal with the Islamic faith directly? Or more specifically: women with infertility issues in Islamic countries, where it presents a faith crisis (in some cases a turning to other possible remedies)? Are there Iraninan or other foreign films that wrestle with these areas? ---- To sign off Screen-L, e-mail [log in to unmask] and put SIGNOFF Screen-L in the message. Problems?
