Update on Images of Indians documentary…. Title: IMAGES OF INDIANS: HOW HOLLYWOOD STEREOTYPED THE NATIVE AMERICAN (2003) This short documentary uses an abundance of clips from major films to flesh out the problem of the Native American in film. Russell Means, Wes Studi, Peter Rollins of Film & History, and Jennifer Kilpatrick discuss the creation and dissemination of the images. While not enough time was devoted to such topics as "the frontier in American history" by F.J. Turner or the dangerous veneration of the frontier as a place for the creation and maintenance of "American character." On the other hand, this program is short and does give specific examples from available films and will be an excellent teaching tool-from which teachers can embellish once student attention is aroused. The program is based, in part, on the following text, now being printed in a second edition with additional materials. Rollins, Peter and John E. O'Connor eds, HOLLYWOOD'S INDIANS: THE NATIVE AMERICAN IN FILM (UP of Kentucky, 2003) Location: Starz Westerns channel on Direct TV and many cable systems.
