The puppetmaster's memory (and the film) is a free-flowing, ever-changing, and sometimes contradictory and faulty vision. Once I understood this (about 20 minutes into the movie), I was able to relax and enjoy it much more. The second viewing, naturally, was even more rewarding. Memory is a favorite theme of the director (as is for one of his disciples, Kore-eda Hirokazu, who did a very lovely documentary on him) and it's a film very much worth exploring a few times. Admitedly, many of the recent "minimalist" films (static camera, one-minute shot of a closed door, etc.) from around the world seen very much like the emperor's new clothes and have annoyed the hell out of me, but in my opinion, this isn't one of them. And seeing it on film, as I did, probably is a vastly different experience than video.
