St. Amand For Immediate Release Public Forum: An Update on Writers' Rights A free public forum on the effect of the recent Supreme Court decision in the case of _Tasini v. New York Times_ will be held Wednesday, Jan. 30, from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the National Press Club's Holman Lounge, 529 14th St. N.W., Washington, D.C. The program, organized by the Washington Independent Writers Legal and Educational Fund (LEF), is co-sponsored by Washington Independent Writers (WIW), the American University School of Communications and the National Press Club. Speakers who will discuss the landmark decision include Jonathan Tasini, president of the National Writers Union, author and chief claimant in the case against the Times; Marybeth Peters, register for U.S. copyrights; Paul Dickson, author, LEF board member and former WIW president; and a representative of the publishers' perspective. Peter Jaszi, professor of copyright law at American University's Washington College of Law, will moderate the panel. The court decision, which held that publishers do not have the right automatically to include published articles in electronic databases, has significance both for the real world in which writers seek to earn a living and for the future of the digital revolution that has given publishers opportunities to use authors' works in unforeseen ways. While admission is free, seating is limited. Call (202) 662-7501 to reserve a seat.
