Hello Screen-L, Earlier this year The Circle of Dutch Film Journalists (of which I am a member) organised the seminar Culture Shocks on film criticism and cultural differences. The contributions were published in a brochure - below I have added the blurp. I hope it's not too improper to promote this on the list, but if it might be of interest to any of you, just let me know, and I can mail you a pdf-copy to have a look (hardcopies available as well). Best regards, Leo Bankersen * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * What happens if a film critic leaves familiar home ground to write about films from another culture? Will this lead to an enthusiastic, albeit misjudging report? A romantic glorification? Or a self-centred reproach? In short, will it make sense? These and similar questions were tackled at the seminar 'CULTURE SHOCKS - Pitfalls and challenges for the exploring film critic', organised by the Circle of Dutch Film Journalists (KNF), in co-operation with the International Film Festival Rotterdam. The contributions to this meeting, collected in this publication, range from an academic analysis of the Western frame of reference to a juicy anecdote about the wig of Brigitte Lin. The full texts of the lectures by film scholar Wim Staat, filmmaker T.B. Srinivas and film critic Dana Linssen, interviews with director Clara Law and sales agent Wouter Barendrecht, together with the complete set of reviews from Critical Encounter Thailand-The Netherlands are included. Offering not only a reflection on the profession of the critic, but also food for thought on the cultural aspects of globalisation. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * Leo Bankersen . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
