A librarian colleague asked me about sources for a student query on the use
of American films by both the Soviet government and the
Japanese--specifically: the use of THE GREAT GATSBY movie as an example of
American life used by the Soviets; and the use by the Japanese during WWII
of films by the Three Stooges!

I couldn't find Gatsby in the index of Hoberman's The Red Atlantis. I found
a citation for an essay by John Dower on "Japanese cinema goes to War" but
that was the best I could do. Any suggestions? I've no idea where these
questions originated.
