Two films which portray the artist in the context of his time, and do it well, are:

 EDVARD MUNCH (Peter Watkins, dir.)

VINCENT AND THEO (Robert Altman, dir)

POLLOCK might be interesting to look at as well, because it attempts to do this, and doesn't quite succeed.

There is also CAMILLE CLAUDEL, as it is one of the few films that depicts the existence of the woman artist.
