CALL FOR PAPERS: 9th Midwestern Conference on Film, Language, & Literature Northern Illinois University April 5-7, 2002 Keynote Speakers: FILM: Dr. Tom Gunning, Professor of Art History, University of Chicago. Noted for his work on the evolution of narrative, issues of film as culture, and the complex relationship between cinema and technology. His two most recent books include _The Films of Fritz Lang: Allegories of Vision and Modernity_ and _D.W. Griffith and the Origins of American Narrative Film: The Early Years_. CYBER TEXT: Dr. Steve Jones, Professor and Chair of Communication, University of Illinois-Chicago. His areas of expertise include communication technology, the social history of the Internet, and popular music studies. He has written and edited several books, including _CyberSociety_, _Virtual Culture, Rock Formation, and Doing Internet Research_. LITERATURE: Dr. Joseph Carroll, professor of English, University of Missouri-St. Louis. He is the author of _The Cultural Theory of Matthew Arnold_, Wallace Stevens' Supreme Fiction_, and _Evolution and Literary Theory. His presentation will critique the poststructuralist paradigm, offering in its place a theory of literature that situates literary criticism within the matrix of Darwinian evolutionary theory. Please submit one page abstracts for 10-page papers (each presentation should be approximately 20 minutes) by JANUARY 14, 2002.
