AT 5th ANNUAL MEETING, CONGRESS OF THE AMERICAS October 18 - October 21, 2001 www.udlap.mx/congress (The deadline for submitting papers and panels is June 1, 2001.) Here is one of the best-kept secrets of the Popular Culture Movement, the biennial meeting in Puebla, Mexico on the campus of The University of the Americas of Cholula-Puebla. This lovely campus features an American-style football team (national champs for three years) and a school that will look familiar to any Californian. However, these annual meetings bring scholars from all over the Americas to share analysis of books, films, radio, images of men and women; another strand looks at NAFTA and the developing economic and political situation for the Americas. Some papers are in English and some are in Spanish; plenary sessions have simultaneous translations via ear pieces. The local people are friendly and hospitable. Registration includes all snacks, wine and cheese hours, and a full banquet under the stars--plus a PCA/ACA luncheon. The weather in Puebla at this time of year is wonderful. Side trips and tours are available and will be in the final literature for the conference. Papers related to Latin and US topics are welcomed. Comparative studies are especially welcomed. Be sure that a really interesting paper, whatever the topic, will receive a thoughtful response from the assembled scholars. Some of the top scholars of the Hoover Institution and related "think tanks" attend and share their insights about international developments. Seymour Martin Lipset has been in regular attendance. Ray and Pat Browne will be in attendance as will the Presidents of the PCA and ACA. A special luncheon for PCA/ACA registrants will be held on Saturday at noon, followed by opportunities to tour and visit. (Luncheon is included in the registration.) Please see the SUBJECT AREAS on the web site. Your first step should be to contact an Area Chair nearest your topic. If there is no such Chair, write directly to Dr. Rollins as below, but do check to see if there is an Area Chair related to your proposal. Contacting the Area Chair will be better for us all since the Chairs are most directly connected to the presentations and panels for their topics and subject areas -- and will be able to cluster you with comfortable panel companions and colleagues.
