Radio Show on PRESIDENCY IN FILM NOW AVAILABLE ON WEB (10 mins of narrative and interview) Dear Fellow Scholars of Film and Video: In connection with our PRESIDENCY IN FILM AND TELELVISION conference, National Public Radio did an interesting piece on the topic, interviewing actor Martin Sheen, scholar Peter Rollins, and promoter, Gabriel Rafshoon. Pat Dowell provided some excellent interpretive bridges and commentary. It is always fun to hear our friends on the media, so go to the Film & History Web site and click on the conference block. Then click on the NPR hyperlink and use your RealAudio to advantage. (It took a few minutes to load on my machine.) The debates, the presidential winds that are blowing, are all making our conference increasingly relevant and important. If you are not giving a paper at the meeting, DO attend and immerse yourself in the methodology of Film & History studies. All of us are humanists who believe that visual media needs our study; we are not film enthusiasts or aesthetes--groups that have their own meetings and their own events. I need to mention, again, that many of us got our start in this field by attending a meeting like this--where we became immersed in the topic and the primary sources. Give it a shot! Full information is on our web site as is the hyperlink to the radio show.... Peter Rollins of Film & History [log in to unmask] Here is the entry on the NPR page once you click there...(about the sixteenth down the page) Presidents on the Big Screen (14.4 | 28.8) -- In the second part of a two-part series on images of the President in film, Pat Dowell reports on how show business and politics have become intertwined. The movies treat the president's role with a high degree of symbolism...from a wise, almost divine figure during the thirties and forties, to a mythical hero and tough guy in the movies of today. Meanwhile, the real executive office has learned how to use the tricks of Hollywood to its advantage.
