Dear list members, I am preparing a syllabus for a film course titled "Cinema and Realism", in which I cover aspects of French poetic realism, U.S. film noir, and Italian neo-realism. Early in the course I need to convey to students the fundamental distinctions inhering between such concepts as "realism", "reality" and "the Real." I'm wondering if anyone is familiar with an essay or book that addresses these distinction in a cogent manner - something that I could excerpt in a course reader without students having to read an entire textbook? I'd be grateful for any citations that come to mind. Thanking you in advance!
