Paul Fryer asks: >> Can anyone identify the source of the term >> "crossover" when applied to the >> activities of an artist moving from one genre to >> another ? Or, early uses >> of the term ? I don't know whether this is an early use of the word or not, but in the cinema industry, the term 'crossover' refers to the practice of a van driver collecting a film print from a cinema late at night on a Thursday, and then taking it (often several hundred miles) to another cinema ready for its first show the following day (the cinema week runs from Friday to Thursday). This tends to happen more frequently with arthouse and re-release titles, where a smaller number of prints are made which play for short runs at a large number of cinemas. If you know that a film is coming to your local venue 'on crossover', I wouldn't recommend booking dress circle seats for the first show on its opening date, because the chances are that it won't get there on time!
