You're probably aware of this one too, but John Fell's FILM AND THE
NARRATIVE TRADITION deals with the influence of various types of media
on cinema.  You might find Bergman's autobiographical comments on the
influence of the magic lantern on his career useful (also see the
opening scenes of FANNY AND ALEXANDER).
