Well, European tapes are physically the same as US as well, that's not the
problem.  With DVDs there are two:  industry-imposed region coding and the
PAL video standard.  You can get around the region code (assuming the disc
is coded, some are and some aren't) as a hidden menu item on some players
or you can have other players altered (which voids the warranty).  As for
PAL, again a few players allow you to change this easily though even in
that case you supposedly get better results with an outboard standards
converter.
