While working on my M.A. I seriously considered asking a similar question for my thesis. During my first reading of _Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?_ (I was only 16 or so) I laughed regularly at the "black humor" of the conversations between the characters. I very much took the play to be a black comedy...but after seeing the completely dark and depressing film version that we all know so well, I wondered how such a slight change of interpretation could twist the viewers perception of the same piece so very much. I saw a college stage version of WAVW which was directed to be upbeat, witty, and energetic... the audience laughed all the way through. I can't say I laugh at Taylor and Burton... Adam.
