Mike, A simple option that I used was to connect a vcr to the video card input on my computer and simply 'cut and paste' the images I wanted. In my case I was writing about TV so there were no problems about films having been scanned and cropped for TV which might pose a problem for you, but if not, and assuming that the use of a single image from each film (or in my case TV show) was not infringing copyright, then this might be a 'quick and dirty' solution for you.
