The Film Colloquium at the University of Washington is proud to announce its First Annual Interdisciplinary Graduate Student Film Conference and Short Film Festival. Outside(r) Hollywood May 18-19, 2000 Hollywood has long dominated the international cinema market, with a proliferation of films produced and directed along a foreordained approach to film as an artistic and social medium. Analysis of the Hollywood formula has generated an entire school of thought on the so-called Classic Code of the Hollywood film. And yet, one hundred years of cinematic history has also witnessed the evolution of a spectrum of counter-traditions to the Hollywood film. Independent, foreign, international, experimental, documentary, and short film all function as resistant counter-codes, and the increasingly complicated interaction between these realms of filmic approach and with Hollywood as a whole demands entirely new ways of thinking about what it is that we call "the Hollywood film." Recently, even within the Hollywood film industry, individual, carefully crafted films with non-traditional cinematic visions such as "The Fight Club" and "American Beauty" provide a new twist to the "Classic Code." This conference seeks to plot out the theoretical issues surrounding the interplay between realms of film, to further understand resistance to the Classic Code, and to explore the critical nuances of cinematic development.
