Late SCMS Panel Call: Ideas of INDEPENDENCE As this year’s SCMS conference meets in Boston, one of the historic cities of the American Revolution, this panel invites ideas of what now constitutes independence in the media industries. After the celebration of American “indies” in the 1980s and 1990s, and given the current reach of the mass media, how can we contextualize independent companies and media-makers? Possible topics include: *Aesthetics that arguably constitute an independent style, and their relationship to more conventional techniques. *Past or present media-makers who staked out claims of independence, or manifest ambivalence between what they consider independent and commercial work. *Histories of media companies that moved from an independent to mainstream position, visa versa, or that straddle the two. *The openness of different media at particular periods to independent productions. *Uses of the term “independent” in distribution and other industry discourses. Other lucid and creative ideas on the theme of independence are welcome. Send a proposed title and 250-word abstract, plus a one-paragraph bio and up to five sources by August 25 to Dr. Gabriel M.
