For photographs and films: There are several National Film Board of
Canada films that are essential to your study of films and photographs --
especially the docudrama feature film _The Company of Strangers_ about
seven old women stranded in the woods who pass the time telling personal
stories which are punctuated by still photos from their past. Also
interesting is a 1970 NFB short by Martin Duckworth called "The Wish" which
cuts to still photos every time the filmmaker's two daughters look at the
camera.
Essential reading: "Cinema, Memory and the Photographic Trace" by
Peter Harcourt and "Image: Representation and Object--the Photographic
Image in Canadian Avant-Garde Film" by R. Bruce Elder. Both of these essays
are in an out-of-print anthology called _Take Two_, edited by Seth Feldman
in 1984.
See also R. Bruce Elder's book: _Image and Identity: Reflections on
Canadian Film and Culture_, Waterloo, ON: Wilfrid Laurier UP, 1989.
