I haven't seen all of the films listed below, however I have to agree
with the following selections which are all excellent:

I would also recommend the following:

Deus e diabo na terra do sol
(Black God, White Devil) by Glauber Rocha (Brazil)

Memorias del subdesarrollo
(Memories of Underdevelopment) by Tomas Guitierrez Alea (Cuba)

Nazarin
by Luis Bunuel (Mexico)

Although I think the idea of a canon of Latin American films is ... well
strange.  But as an introduction to a variety of political and social
perspectives, perhaps this list of films is useful.
