I have a few suggestions for Latin American films--sorry they're all quite
recent.

Any film by Argentinian director Eliseo Subiela should make it onto the
list. "Hombre Mirando al Sudeste" ("The Man Facing Southeast") is a
great/esoteric/thinking man's sci-fi sort of film. "El Lado Oscuro del
Corazon" ("The Dark Side of the Heart"--available at Hollywood video for
you list folks who haven't seen it), is actually one of my favorite films
EVER. Surrealistic tale of a poet/womanizer whose best friend is "Death"
and whose mission is to find a woman who can fly, literally. Hilarious,
poetic, marauding gleefully between sexy and sexist, this is a great film.

Another choice would be the Guatemalan film "El Norte," which is fairly
well known. Touching and depressing tale of a brother and sister who
pilgrammage, against impossible odds, north to the U.S.--only to find the
streets aren't paved with gold.
