SCS Annual Conference, April 15-18, 1999, West Palm Beach, FL

 

 

1) "Scholarly Organizations and the Practice of Politics"

 

Following changes and developments in the global social arena, scholarly

organizations such as SCS, MLA, and TDC, among others, began to take

public stands on issues of import to their constituencies, a move which

has been the source of much debate and has led to a rethinking of the

functions and limits of scholarly organizations in general. This

workshop will address the position of SCS vis-a-vis this process: what

is or should be its relationship to the public sphere, political

practice and society at large? 10 minute position papers please.

2) "Intersections of Race, Class, Ethnicity, Gender, and Sexuality in

the Film Studies Classroom"

 

This panel poses the question of how discourses of race, class,

ethnicity, gender, and sexuality are incorporated into the film studies

classroom and, furthermore, how their historical, conceptual, and

quotidian intersections are foregrounded, analyzed, and critiqued.

Papers focusing on particular classroom situations and experiences as

well as general pedagogical theories and methodologies are encouraged.

3) "To Be Real: Featuring Under-Documented Communities"

 

This panel explores the intersection of documentary and feature film

discourses in narratives about marginalized communities (queer

subcultures, migrant workers, ethnic enclaves, etc.). Dramatic films

labor to be authentic and representative. Papers might examine dramatic

fiction films, films that combine documentary and dramatic modes,

dramatic films that borrow from or draw upon documentary aesthetics and

vice versa, etc.
