Was there not something later in the series, where the guy who played
the piano, who was the son of a cab driver, came out? I know Fame L.A.
recently had an episode where it was learned that the current love interest
of one of the male leads had an ex-boyfriend who died of AIDS, was
HIV-positive herself, had a lesbian / bisexual past, and had come on
to the male lead's female best friend the year before.

On questions of innuendo, what do we make of the male alien with the
female earth presence dating men -- as on Third Rock from the Sun?

And if not sexuality, gender roles were certainly challenged in
Mork and Mindy -- didn't Mork give birth to Jonathan Winters?

And if Klinger's heterosexuality was never in doubt to the in-crowd
(which is to say members of the 4077 and the t.v. audience), it
was nevertheless regularly questioned by guest stars, which made
homosexual appearance an issue the show dealt with on a certain level.

The same is not true for Buffy and Hildegarde (Tom Hanks and Peter
Scolari) on Bosom Buddies. Their heterosexuality was always
exploited as the show's theme.

Going back to the original query, if the selection isn't limited to
American programming, there is a rather overtly gay character in the
British Are You Being Served?.
