Themes of sexual identity have turned up in the STAR TREK franchise
from time to time, though not as often as one might expect. A notable
example is the episode of NEXT GENERATION that had an alien female in a
love affair with Riker that was condemned by her society for being
hetero!

I also don't recall anyone mentioning the all-too-short-lived MY
SO-CALLED LIFE, which featured a gay high school student who was thrown
out by his family when he came out. He eventually was taken in by a
teacher--relunctant to do so because he too was gay and still in the
closet. The show ended not too long after that story arc developed,
though.

On a somewhat more subtle level, the WISE GUY series sometimes had
intense relationships between the main character and the male gangsters
he was working with, especially in the first arc with Ray Sharkey.
Nothing overt--but lots of suggestiveness.
