This character is actually Captain Susan Ivanova--the 2nd in command
(through the 4th year)--her interest (unacted upon) was in Talia Shire (if
I recall correctly), a telepath. It emerges toward the end of the 3rd
year(??).
 
It might also be worth while thinking about the nephew-character played by
Charles Nelson Riley on the TV version of "The Ghost and Mrs. Muir." It's
never clear whether he is coded as an unacknowledged gay, or is just a
"sissy," or how these two things relate in this time-frame.
