*Aesthetics of Noise in Film and Fiction*

 

Abstracts are invited on any aspect of non-musical, non-verbal aural

phenomena in fiction or film. Of particular interest are papers dealing

with the impact of 19th- and 20th-century aural technologies on the

representation and aestheticization of noise in narrative forms. However,

papers dealing with texts from other time periods are certainly welcome.

 

Papers may consider constructions of background noise, sound effects, "white

noise," feedback, noise pollution, static, or "natural" sounds; examine the

psychological, emotional or physiological impact of noise; discuss the

social, historical, or political implications of aestheticizing noise; take

a comparative look at noise and other sensory phenomena, or deal with how

noise gets defined by fiction and film in relation to music or speech.

General theoretical approaches (semiotic, Lacanian, etc.) as well as close

readings of particular texts/films are welcome. Papers broadly construing

the term "noise" are encouraged.
