For a different perspective from Dr. Lunenfeld's, Screen-L subscribers might
want to see my essay "The Myth of Independent Film" reprinted as a chapter in
PUBLIC BROADCASTING AND THE PUBLIC TRUST, edited by David Horowitz and yours
truly. I discuss Maya Deren and some of the other names he mentions. The book
should be in most libraries, Amazon.com, some giant bookstores. And, if anyone
wants a copy and can't find it elsewhere, just send me a stamped
 self-addressed envelope for a 15 ounce package and I'll ship you a copy (I
still have some in my basement).
