The Duke is surely the prototypical tough-talking movie GI and Audie Murphy
movies have played their part, but the TV probably influenced more of my
generation than movies did. Sad to say, my images of tough-talking junior
officers come from SGT. Bilko and Gomer Pyle. For, as they say, it's a
long, long way from Iwo Jima to An Officer and a Gentleman. And,
interestingly, there were no tough-talking guys in M*A*S*H.
