Emily Watson who plays Bess, might have seen Dreyer's "Passion of Joan of
Arc", von Trier himself saw Dreyer=B4s "The Word". From this film Trier get=
s
a core problematic: is Bess insane or is she a modern Jesus? Only, Trier
does not manage to make this question a disturbing dilemma. Dreyer does.
"The Word" is a very strong film, an the central key to an understanding of
Trier=B4s work. If you see it and have ideas about the link to "Breaking the
waves" it would be very interesting to hear what you think. By the way, it
would also be interesting to see what you write about "Breaking the waves".
