We use the Pioneer 8000, because it can treat the long play discs almost
like the digital discs, thus enabling at least some manipulation.  It may
just be that our machines are too old or not top of the line, but this
isn't possible on them.

No question.  It's just the disc-flipping that takes time and is
disruptive, since I have to do the various steps to make it happen and
the 8000 takes almost a full minute to initialize the disc.  I
use a computer interface that enables me to pre-program my clips and does
save me a great deal of time and hassle in lecture.  I also have a switch
on the cart that enables me to display clips from either the laserdisc or
VHS (or even show the computer screen if I wanted to do that.)
