One of the criticisms I've read about DVD is that, because it relies on
data compression, it is often NOT the superior reproduction that it was
supposed to be, but that is second-hand info. I've yet to see one in
action. My brother, who has been involved in designing these units, has
told me that the problem of on-screen "freezing" due to compression has
not been completely eliminated (although he told me that several months
ago, and in this rapidly changing field, this problem may, by now, be
satisfactorily resolved).
 
One advantage that I haven't heard mentioned is that DVD improves audio
storage capabilities. It has room for 8 soundtracks and 32 subtitle
tracks, so that the film can be translated into multiple languages and
still stored on one unit. The same disk can also be used in the PAL
market, for more universal format standardization.
