I think _The Shining_ gets my nod for the most chilling horror film--no
matter how often I see it, it still unnerves me.  Of course, _Psycho_
deserves mention not only as a great film in its own right but as the
granddaddy of the slasher genre.  Others:

_Alien_
_Halloween_
 
My girlfriend suggests _Evil Dead_ and _The Evil Dead 2_.
