TO POLITICAL, BOOK, FEATURE EDITORS:
AN ELECTION TALE: THE GREAT 1913 TERRE HAUTE VOTE FRAUD SCANDAL IS
BROUGHT TO LIFE IN NEW SCREENPLAY AND BOOK.
Indianapolis, Ind. --While ballot box stuffing may be less common in the
United
States today, in 1913 one of the largest vote fraud scandals in American history
occurred
in Terre Haute, Ind. It has inspired a new screenplay and a book.
Learning about the scandal in which the mayor rigged the election to
guarantee his
victory, Mike Jansen, 33, a producer of radio and television commercials wrote
a
screenplay, "The Incumbent", which has already become a book ( $15.95, Guild
Press).

"As I began my research, I found that the political headlines of 1913 were
not much
different than political headlines of 1996," Jansen says. "The mayor even tried
to run for
governor when he got out of prison," Jansen says. Jansen completed his
screenplay with
the aid of New York based screenwriter, Shane Perez.
Historical records indicate that there were more votes cast for the mayor
than men,
women, children, dogs and cats in the whole county. One women claimed
to have voted more than thirty times and a man claimed he blistered his finger
on the
voting machine casting multiple votes for the incumbent mayor.
Both the screenplay and the novel are set in the thirties and given the
dimension of
fiction. Two rookie US Marshals are sent from Chicago to Terre Haute to
investigate the
claims of voter fraud. They come up against corruption that runs even deeper
than they
expected; kickbacks, scams, threats, even murder, all played out amidst the
speakeasies,
gangsters and paradoxical glamour of Prohibition America.
Clifton Bush, author of "The Third Prophecy", has adapted the screenplay to
a novel. "This story has so many enthralling elements, I decided to put the
sequel to
"The Third Prophecy" on hold to write "The Incumbent"," Bush says.
"My dream is to produce this story as a feature film and I believe the
novel will be a
stepping stone toward the production," Jansen says.
